    Dead Rising Text Will Never Be Patched

    HDTV owners waiting patiently for a patch to fix that tinny text issue, well from what Capcom has to say, I wouldn't be holding my breath

    ""Due to the amount of text and the size of the patch necessary to change the text, a patch isn't possible for this issue," said the company

    Real shame, Capcom not taking care of HD gamers.

    Basicly they screwed up when they made the text rendering function. They hard coded the break points, and now to fix it they'd have to re-code both the rendering engine and the text itself. Stupid rookie mistake on Capcom's part, this is something web designers have known about for the last 10 years...

    I have a pretty good technical breakdown here:

    A little birdie told me that the reason Capcom isn't releasing a patch is because the carriage return is hard coded into the dialog text. This doesn't seem like a huge problem when you first think about it, but it means that if you were to increase the font size, you would have to reformat every line of text in the entire game so that it fits in the dialog boxes.

    In other words, Capcom had a major flaw in their inital design plan that caused them to set up the game with hard coded breaks in text. By increasing the font size, less text would fit on each line, and they would have to reformat all of the dialog.

    Capcom was bitten by a rookie mistake in game design, and now they feel it's too expensive an issue to fix. They should have done what web designers have known for the last decade. Set up the dialog box to a specific size, then have the text rendering code fit the text to the box. This lets you design for different text box sizes and different fonts.
