nah, anybody can do it...it's easiest to do with yoshi or toad because of their heads...but i used wario after messing around with that for a few months, then i guess that day for 10 or 12 hours and switched to wario and bam, got all 3 tries. there are people that claim to have faster times for 3 laps but as far as i can see, this is the only actual solid proof of this happening..
