...Passing Of A Toronto Icon....
Growing up in the Toronto area, CFNY was the station to listen to if you wanted your fill of grunge, new wave, alternative and so forth.
As you enter your teen years, music becomes a defining moment for you; it pretty much sets the tone of who you are, how you express yourself and so forth.
CFNY, better known as "The Edge" these days, got heavy radio play from me during these times. Years before Napster and P2P file sharing, radio stations were the outlet to hear what's new, what's "hot"
One common voice I grew up with was one of Martin Streek. I would make sure to turn into CFNY every Friday to Saturday night to hear him live from The Kingdom or The Phoenix. I was exposed to bands, and genres of music I would never been exposed to. This man was a great influence on the varied musical taste I have today.
It didn't matter which Clash song would be coming on... "The best freakin' band in the world, The Clash".
Sadly in May. After 20 years, his work with CFNY came to an end. I will not go into my feelings towards CFNY, I do however have my reason not tuning into that station going on three years now.
The Toronto radio scene has truly lost someone very special, a voice and a passion in our city that will never be seen again.
The last entry you left us was on your Facebook:
"So...I guess that's it...thanks everyone...I'm sorry to those I should be sorry to, I love you to those that I love, and I will see you all again soon (not too soon though)... Let the stories begin."
Rest In Peace brother, I do hope you are in peace now, Toronto will never be the same without you. We'll miss you.
